Hi there Raelinmonet22,
We understand you're looking to purchase an external monitor for your MacBook Air.
Check out compatible monitors by selecting your Mac model under the Mac Compatibility section here: Displays & Mounts - Mac Accessories
For any additional questions about purchasing accessories for your Mac, reach out here: Contacting Apple
Regards.

Use a Small Projector:
I'm using a small a projector, and project it off a small screen (30" Diagonally). Works like a charm. You'd find a small projector and small screen on Amazon.
First, if your MacBook Air is one of the new M1 models, you are out of luck as the M1 only supports a single display natively.
If it is an Intel model, I came across this in another thread here today and you may find it of interest:

I am sure there are other offerings if you take the time to Google it.
ASSUMING that you're talking about using this set up at home and office....I'd just buy two monitors and docks/dongles. I've never even heard of a 'portable' monitor.
And if you're talking two monitors IN ADDITION TO your laptop screen, then you need to check and see whether or not your operating system and hardware will support TWO extra monitors. I remember seeing where the latest MBA will only support ONE monitor.

"Interesting. Someone else said it won’t work if I have the new M1 MacBook Air and that’s what I have. Idk :("

About the Connection:
It uses an HDMI cable, which I use off of this adapter: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple
What exactly are your requirements for a "portable" monitor? How portable? At what price point? Etc.?
Interesting. Someone else said it won’t work if I have the new M1 MacBook Air and that’s what I have. Idk :(
This makes me super sad. I bought it strictly for this not even thinking this would be a problem :(
I mean like this. For work and home and if I’ll be traveling and don’t want to bring my monitors
Perfect! Ok thanks!!
