New iPhone Transfer

So this question is coming from my new phone (my sister’s old one but still) because my old phone was acting up. However the backup wasn’t working so I simply reset everything without backing up and nothing got transferred but a few of my contacts. I had some pretty important stuff in my old phone that was for school and some other stuff I was doing. Is there any way to retrieve all my stuff?

Back up your old phone and start again.

The backup does not have to be to iCloud; you can back it up to a computer (iTunes or Finder on a recent Mac).
