jpeg thumbnails suddenly not displaying

Overnight I've lost the thumbnail images for about 90% of jpegs on my MacBook Pro. In fact, screenshots aren't showing and only some png files too.


It's the same across all folders. The only way they display is if I go into Gallery view - the icons at the bottom remain generic, but the images display above. And if I hit the space bar they will show individually, but I can't go and open every single image to find the one I'm looking for - that's just crazy.


I'm assuming there was a OS update overnight and this is the issue? I'm running Monterey 12.1

​Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand you're not seeing thumbnails for all of the photos on your Mac. We'd like to see if we can help out.


Are you using iCloud Photos?


Also, have you tried clicking Apple menu () > Restart, and then checking it again? Let us know if this helps, and whether you're using iCloud.
