Volume resets to the middle when Bluetooth headphones fall out of range, then reconnect.

When my Skullcandy headphones fall out of Bluetooth range of my iPhone 12 mini, the volume resets itself to the middle—which is a lot louder than I listen to my headphone music at...

I have tried a few things one by one to see if they fix this issue, but nothing has yet:

  • It happens with any app playing audio
  • I've turned off 'Attention Aware'
  • I've adjusted the 'headphone safety' volume up and down
  • I've deactivate the side buttons
  • I've reset the headphones
  • I've reset the Bluetooth paring
  • I've reset the iPhone
  • I've clean reinstalled one of the apps, and cleared the app cache that it happens with (Spotify)

Any other ideas?

Hello MrNicA,

From your post it appears you are having an issue with some Bluetooth headphones.

We would recommend trying to isolate where the issue is originating.

To do this, we would test the headphones with another iPhone and see if the same thing happens. We would also test the current iPhone with another set of headphones and see if the same thing happens.

Once you know where the issue is originating, steps can be taken to resolve it.

Another thing we recommend is to power cycle the iPhone using these instructions: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support. While simple, this can refresh the iOS, apps and connections.

Cheers.

Thanks for your reply ManJor.

I have already tired the reset option (with no improvement); it's usually one of my first go-tos if something isn't behaving.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I tried it with my wife's iPhone 7, repeating the process of pausing the music, taking the headphones out of range, reestablishing a connection, then resuming music and the volume remained at the same low setting. (I've also never had this issue with my old iPhone 5se)

I don't however have another set of Bluetooth headphones to try it with, so can't test that, but having it reconnect fine with a different phone makes me think it's something to do with my phone...
