Where Did “Use Listening History” Go?

“Use Listening History” has disappeared from the Music app settings, although it still shows up in Search.

Losing this function breaks all of my smart playlists.

No, I do not subscribe to Apple Music. I own my music, I don’t rent it.

Yes, I have Sync Library turned on, reflecting my main Music collection on my Mac.

Anyone know what’s going on?

Problem solved.

Well, not solved. But understood.

I just heard back from Support and "Use Listening History" has been deprecated for anyone who isn't an Apple Music subscriber. Not even my iTunes Match subscription is enough money to stop Apple from removing a key feature -- one that dates back to the very first Smart Playlists.

So, for anyone who isn't an Apple Music subscriber and wonders why their Smart Playlists are suddenly broken for Match streaming, now you know.

sgreenmonument,

Thanks for the information. You mentioned you didn't subscribe to Apple Music. Based on the article previously shared, the option is a feature of Apple Music.

However, we'd recommend reaching out to Apple Support directly for more assistance, as there's no documentation it's available for iOS devices without an Apple Music subscription.

You can also contact Apple using the list of numbers by region here to further clarify. Contact Apple for support and service

Hi sgreenmonument,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with locating a Music feature. We're happy to provide some information to assist.

Based on the details in the guide page here, this is an Apple Music feature for iOS devices: See recommended music on iPad

Specifically the following section:

"Tell Apple Music to ignore your listening habits

If you don’t want your followers on Apple Music to see any of the music you play, follow these steps.

  1. Go to Settings  > Music.
  2. Turn off Use Listening History.

Turning off your listening history impacts new music recommendations and the contents of Replay playlists."

However, you can find steps for creating your own smart playlists on a Mac and then syncing to your iOS devices with the steps below.

Create, edit, and delete Smart Playlists in Music on Mac

or PC Create, delete, and use Smart Playlists in iTunes on PC

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using your computer

Additionally, sync library works with a subscription to Apple Music or iTunes Match. Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music

Cheers!
