AirPods Max Wired connection does not work

The AirPods Max work fine with bluetooth and can connect to all my devices. However when I start using the apple lightning to 3.5mm cable it does not produce any sound. I used 3 different devices such as Iphones, windows pc, and a Mac. I also used 2 different cables and updated all the firmware. I found a thread that I posted below but nobody answered with a solution.

Air Pods Max works fine with iPhone or iPad using Bluetooth.

But I am trying connect the the Air Pods Max to an iPad without using Bluetooth and I get no sound on wired connection using Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter.

What is the problem?

I also had this problem. Got really frustrating for me. I used the Apple lightning adapter in conjunction with a Bose Aux cable and no sound. I tried different other (working) aux cables and none worked with the Max.

My Solution:

I had to purchase the 35$ cable from Apple (Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Audio Cable) and that is the ONLY cable that works.

Frustrating due to the fact, that these 550$ headphones do not have an aux output and the overpriced 10$ adapter to aux will also not work in conjunction with a different aux cable.

YOU HAVE TO BUY THE NOT INCLUDED AND DEFINITELY OVERPRICED 35$ APPLE CABLE, TO HAVE WIRED SOUND WITH YOUR OVERPRICED AIRPODS MAX.

Thanks Apple

Very unfortunate problem here with the AirPod max’es not working with the aux cable. I’m flying a lot again now and am stuck with these headphones that I can’t use on the airplane. Great headphones, and probably one of the most beautiful designs, however they are useless. I have since bought some b&o headphones because the Apple store employee basically told me there’s nothing I can do about this. Massive fail for Apple. This company has lost its magic. Could write a PhD thesis on all of the other recent products I’ve bought that have problems.

This is an interesting find. What disappoints me the most is that I suggested this scenario to the apple "Genius" technical support, because I don't wanna fork out extra money just to find out if it has to be about the cable. Guess what that "Genius" said.... "We don't need to waste time about that, let's send your product for repair". a product i purchased 4 days ago needs to undergo repair. LMAO.

Way to go apple geniuses of Singapore Jewel... I dunno if she's just lazy af but one thing for sure she aint Genius. 😅

Thanks Ldiamond!

I am quite convinced now that the cord has to be Apple MFi Certified. I haven't tested this one behind the link, but the cord is not (obviously) the same design as it is for other (standard) products.

What comes to having the cord in the box for all, wouldn't make sense because most aren't using it anyway. However, something Apple should learn about this "cord-gate" when people are expecting the best experience with their products.

Hey maxispin, thanks for the response. I’m not sure if this holds true as the adapter (lightning to 35mm) that came with my iPhone did not work. None the less, the fact it doesn’t come with the cord I think is the biggest problem. How are every other major brand (Bose, Sony, etc.), who are less expensive I should add, come with a legit case, wires, charging cables, and an airplane adapter, even though they are “wireless” headphones. It ultimately comes down to trying to maximize profits which is kind of sad being that you’re paying a premium already for the product. To me it would be comparable to not having the three size tip options for the airpod pros and just having the original standard size and if you want smaller or larger you have to buy them from apple.
