Can't play downloaded movies on MacBook appleTV app

Hi, My macbook pro won't play downloaded moves through the Apple TV app. They work fine on my other devices. I've updated the software but still happening. Launches a black screen momentarily at best, otherwise just gives me the spinning rainbow wheel. Any ideas?

I had to authorize the TV app separately even though I had already authorized the Music app. Once I authorized all was well and I could play the downloaded content.

You would think Apple could throw up a dialog box saying, "authorize this device to play content" or something like that, but they just leave us wondering with a spinner.

I was having the same problem with 6 recently purchased movies. Everything else I had downloaded/purchased prior to this plays just fine. I tried numerous recommendations but nothing worked. I went into my local Apple store and was advised to try two things before being sent to an Engineer.

Option 1: Reset the computer completely.

Option 2: Go to TV/General/Files/Reset, then, Account/Authorizations/Deauthorize This Computer. Close the App then re-open and Authorize again.

Option 2 Solved the Problem.

Thank you David, Genius @ the Apple Valley Fair store, your recommendation remedied the issue.

Hope this helps everyone still having this issue.

Are you trying to play on the same device to which they were downloaded? Transfers between devices may not work, or may need additional authorization/verification, although I would expect a proper error message explaining that.

Are you trying to play on the internal MBP screen? External screens may have their own issues (HDCP and bit depth mostly).

What is your model MBP? What is its version macOS?

The rainbow colored spinning pinwheel (beachball of death) indicates being extremely busy, possibly due to insufficient memory. Try a restart of the Mac if you have no other processes running that might cause this.

A spinning white throbber/loading icon means that it is waiting on input, quite often data from the internet. Check the internet connection.

Sorry to hear that. I can’t seem to replicate this issue on my MacBook Pro i7 2019.

For Mac troubleshooting, try

  • Test an issue in safe mode on your Mac. This will tell you if startup items/third party softwares interfere.
  • Test an issue in another user account on your Mac. This will tell you if account related settings interfere.

Else I would suggest to contact an expert from the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).

Jumping in because I have the same issue. No, that's not it. None of what you stated above. But appreciate the assistance. It started after the most recent Monterey update. If you remove a download and redownload, it will play for a few days. Then we're back to the same thing. Spinning beachball of death. It's not my computer's memory. I have a 2021 Macbook Pro with an Apple M1 with 32 gb of memory. Restarting did not repair, setting warnings, cache, and play history didn't fix either. And if it's downloaded, I shouldn't need internet connection. The point of downloading is to have the ability to play on an airplane or other place where connection isn't possible or warranted. If you try and play, it goes into apply not responding. You have to physically close out the TV app, it creates an error log, and you just repeat the process until you remove a downloaded item and redownload.
