Ethernet Option missing on MacBook Air 2017

FYI - Just a note of what happened to me and how it was resolved

  • Ethernet service was not available as an option on all users or during safe boot. Network settings were not showing the option
  • Open a case in Apple, spoke with senior technician, and finally ended up at Apple store
  • At the store the technician's RJ45/ethernet adapter was not recognized at first
  • After running the Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac with the ethernet adapter plugged in the problem disappeared. Prior to running the self-diagnostic test the Wi-fi was set to off on the admin account of the PC.
  • At the beginning of the test the adapter was recognized. Make sure the adapter works first before starting the diagnostic test, if it doesn't work or is not recognized, the diagnostic will ask you for the wi-fi password.
  • Once the Mac re-booted after the test the ethernet service started working again.
  • possible causes are multiple security upgrades by the company VPN service, plus personal VPN service, and other upgrades made it unoperational.
