My newer iMac won't back up to the "passport for mac" disc I used with my previous iMac. Do I have to wipe the disk, or is there a setting I can change?

If your passport is 4-5 years old I would strongly recommend replacing it with a new EHD. The one many experienced users prefer on these forums is the OWC Mercury Elite Pro. They are liked as they are not a throw-away EHD like your Passport, have superior cooling which translates into reliability and is reasonable priced.

If you want to keep the Passport, please reformat (as APFS) and begin re-using as your TM drive.
