Locked out of iPad.

My 3 year old locked our iPad by entering the wrong passcode multiple times. The iPad screen says to connect to iTunes, but when I plug it into the laptop, iTunes will not recognize/read the iPad……..does anyone have any suggestions?

You need to turn the iPad off before connecting and leave it off and then hold the proper button while connecting. See instructions in If you forgot your iPad passcode - Apple Support
