How to disable picture in picture in Mac safari.

Picture in picture is so annoying. When I close a video, I mean to close it. I don't want to have to click it off again down in the right corner. Even worse are automatic ads that I have to click off. How can this feature be turned off completely?

Hey there, IrisRose.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about Picture in Picture on your Apple device. We'd beg lad to see how we can help you out.

You mentioned this behavior occurring within Safari. Does this occur on a specific website or on all websites where video is able to be streamed? We ask as the functionality may be specific to certain devices, so the behavior might not be something that can be adjusted from within macOS itself. The more specifics you provide, the better equipped the community will be to assist.

Take care.

Hi

Thanks for following up. The least annoying instance is on youtube. I click out of a video, and it continues to play in the lower right hand corner. I'd rather not see that, as my closing that video was intentional, not accidental. The other sites are product websites, and I'm sorry that I can't give you specifics. But if you don't mind waiting, I will make note of them in the next couple of days--or three or four--as I find them, and repost. I appreciate your response.

Re: Picture in Picture videos appearing when not wanted.

Hello again and thank you again.

Here are a few sites that either run a video in the lower left corner or activate it front and center:

msn.com. While one is reading an article--with no video--a related active video shows in the lower right. I encounter more than these every day. (Lesson here: don't surf the internet so much. :) )

blog.therainforestsite.greatergood.com--while reading an article, a not-so-related-video active video whams up front and center, then moves to a corner.

discover.com--This is from the science magazine Discover, but it can be reached only through Facebook. (unless one pays for a subscription) Like other sites, when one is reading an article a video shows on the lower right. In these cases however, the video is unrelated.

dramalist.com--on this site, the videos are ads, mostly just animated, but sometimes full videos

epicstream.com--again, while one is reading text, an ad video shows up at lower right.

benzinga.com--video ads show in center and on lower right.

I understand now that these are site specific. But they have become a very distracting problem, even more so when they play with sound. At first they were almost unnoticeable but now they assault the senses--ads that appear on every side but top, with gif animations, full animations that play sound, etc etc. It is not a Safari or MacOs problem, but it has become terribly annoying.

So I am asking if Apple could develop an option for Mac users to stop these supplementary videos--even worse--ads.

These are only a few sites of many, and as you can see, some are sites that have lots of traffic.

Thank you for following through with me.

As usual, lots of talk by Apple going nowhere. Feedback never works. I have the same problem with YT PinP. I do not want it on, but there is no setting in YT to fix it. But there is a 'Enter Picture in Picture ' contextual menu option. So, how can this option be disabled in Safari preferences? In that way, maybe YT PinP will not function.

I've sent lots of stuff to Feedback. Empty hope. So, send this to the relevant people to find a solution. I am tired and ****** off Feedback is meaningless. No, don't say that is the best place. You cqn[t even add screenshots. As I said, empty hope.
