Ipad Mini 2 gifted to me is impossible to get access

I was gifted an Ipad mini2 for my granddaughter. My friend who gifted the iPad no longer has an apple account but when I attempt to activate the iPad on my account it says that it is connected to an account with a login that is similar to my friends email address.

Is this iPad now a brick or is there a way it might be useful?

Hi Garth,

Sounds like the last owner did the erase process. When you turned on the iPad it began the setup process, correct?

My guess: There is a trusted device list that are kept in an individual AppleID account. I’m guessing the person that gave you the iPad still has the iPad in their trusted device list. If that is the issue, that person needs to login to his Apple account to remove the iPad from the account. Guide for doing that:

You mentioned this person said they no longer have an Apple account so I assume they don’t have an iPhone or Mac? Could it be this person just doesn’t log into the Apple account anymore but it is still there?
