It sounds like you’re unable to use inline replies in Messages, and we’re happy to help. To use inline replies, the participants in the group message needs to have iMessage enabled. If the conversation thread appears in green text bubbles and not blue, this helps indicate that the users in the group have SMS/MMS. You can read more about this feature here:

Thank you! After I posted my question, I realized I can’t reply to a text message bubble only to an iMessage bubble. Sorry for the inconvenience.
