Can't access photo library from Google Chrome, Safari, or Instagram

Mac OS: Monterey 12.2.1, MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020), Current as of 02.14.22

Chrome version: 98.0.4758.80 (Official Build) (arm64), Current as of 02.14.22

Problem:

Cannot access and upload photos using Chrome, Safari, or Instagram. (I am logged in with Admin privileges.) "Sites can ask to use your camera" is enabled in Chrome Security/Privacy settings. Privacy settings for Photos (in System Preferences / Security & Privacy / Privacy... ) show no apps listed as having access to Photos.

Alternative:

I am able to open Photos on the MacBook and drag / drop content to Chrome window. But I am not able to upload photos via a browser window.

Hi loosewigg,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We understand you're running into an issue accessing your photos. We're happy to get you pointed in the right direction.

We recommend using the resource below to test if this same issue persists when in safe mode. Depending on the results, you can also see what your next steps would be in that link.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Hello Stevi_S,

Safe Mode did not resolve the issue. I'm holding off for now reinstalling the OS and all apps, trying some other things in Chrome first. As it stands, I can drag/drop photos from the Photos app to Chrome browser. Kind of a PITA, but it's a workaround. If I arrive upon a fix I'll circle back, and post.

Thanks for your help!

Old issue, new issue, what changed...?

Share is not what it used to be like...

Dragging content to the Desktop has always proven to be an effective approach.

1) Old issue, new issue, what changed...?

Answer:

I've had this Macbook Pro since January 2021. I've used Safari in the past, but only on iOS. Chrome has been my browser of choice for a number of years. Since I like to keep everything under one tent whenever possible (bookmarks, etc.), I'm not "browser promiscuous". As far as I can tell, since using the Chrome browser on the MacBook I have never been able to access and upload photos from the .photoslibrary on the Mac.

2) Share is not what it used to be like...

Answer:

Yeah, "the future is not what it used to be" either... (quote attributed to Yogi Berra)

The issue is not one of being able to SHARE content. The issue is, Chrome is not able to ACCESS and UPLOAD photo/video content on the MacBook Pro.

The SHARE feature works fine!

3) Dragging content to the Desktop has always proven to be an effective approach.

Answer:

Noted in the OP!

Drag / drop is a workaround, but not a solution.

3) Safari>Preferences>Extensions>Share Menu

Answer:

Again, SHARE is not the issue. The issue is accessing the .photoslibrary on the MacBook from inside Chrome (and Safari, and other apps).

Apple needs to call Google and game this one out!
