Sidebars on iPad with latest iOS update

How can I turn them off? I find them impossible to work with.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch, 3rd Gen, Wi-Fi, Cell

So what happens is if I’m in notes, clicking on a link will open a vertical screen on the right, not a full screen in a browser. Ditto if I’m in mail, clicking on a link imbedded in the mail will do the same. It used to be that it opened a full screen in a browser. Hope this tells more.
