Help getting files off SuperDrive

MacBook Air (Retina, 13-Inch 2020)

macOS Catalina 10.15.7

I recently purchased a SuperDrive to transfer files from an MP3 CD audiobook after being unable to get other CD drives to mount on my MacBook Air. When I plug the SuperDrive USB directly into the USB-C port using a USB-C adapter, "CDs and DVDs" shows up in the Systems Preferences. The drive also shows up in System Information > USB and in System Information > Disk Burning per the instructions in a previous thread about this topic. The eject button shows at the top of the screen and when pressed, it ejects the CD from the drive. So everything is working there.

However, the SuperDrive does not show up on my desktop and I cannot find a way to access it to transfer the files. When I click on the CDs and DVDs icon, it brings up a dialogue box where I can select options. None of the options apply. I am not inserting a blank CD or blank DVD. I am not inserting a music CD, a picture CD, or a video DVD. Therefore, I am not sure that any of these settings will resolve the issue if I try to change them.

The files are MP3 audiobook files, so I thought I would open the Books app and try to import the files that way. However, because I cannot get the SuperDrive to show up, I cannot add any book files to the Books app.

Any suggestions on how to get the Superdrive to show up would be great. I had a similar issue with two other CD / DVD drives and returned them because I thought they might not be compatible. Since SuperDrive is made by Apple, there should be no compatibility issues, right?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Yes, these boxes are already checked.

I went to the Apple Store here on campus and they told me it is a hardware compatibility issue. The SD has a USB 1.5 connection. The USB-C simple passthrough adapter has a 3.0 connection. This is causing a translation lost. They tested the SD on their 2017 iMac desktop. It showed up and worked just fine. They then tried it on their newer 2021 iMac desktop. It would not show up. They tested it with both a docking station and a simple passthrough adapter. It only worked when connecting directly through a USB port. The tech said it is incompatible with my 2020 MacBook Air. Not sure where to go from here. I can return the SD without issue. I just won't be able to transfer the files.
