Garageband won't record audio

I've been using Cubase 10 for some time, but while on holiday with just my laptop started recording a little with Garageband. The software instruments side was fine and for guitar I simply used the laptops internal mic and manipulated the sound to 'improve' it (it wasn't great).

Now back home in my small studio I wanted to connect my electric and use my audio interface, and Audient ID4, for input and output.

On the laptop preferences the ID4 is selected for both and on Garageband sound preferences ID4 is also selected for input and output (and the interface is connected to a set of good speakers).

Output works fine, but I cannot get a signal through to Garageband. I've tried everything, but have had no luck. I know the guitar is coming through the interface because I can hear it over the monitor speakers, but it is not getting through to Garageband.

Anyone with any ideas?
