Messages Using Significant Energy-New Computer-Monterey

I just bought a new MacBook Air a couple weeks ago and it is using the Monterey operating system. It was fully charged this morning and then the battery quickly died. I thought it was chrome because I was on that all morning but I was informed messages was the app using a lot of energy. When looking at my activity monitor, almost all of my energy use came from messages. If I open messages, my energy impact spikes up. What can I do to fix this?

Hello CharPup,

After reviewing your post, it seems like the Messages process is consuming a lot of energy. Try booting using safe mode and see if the issue persists.

I followed the directions to put the computer into safe mode but when I choose my start up disk, while holding the shift key, the only option says 'continue' and there is no option that says 'continue in safe mode'. I tried holding the shift key the entire time, even when startup options is loading. Initially, I got to startup options and pressed and held the shift key and selected my startup disk but if I click continue, it just reboots. There is no where that says safe mode. What am I doing wrong?
