Trackpad pinch-to-zoom not working (intermittent)

I have a 2020 M1 Mac with built-in trackpad. On an intermittent basis, the two-finger pinch-to-zoom function stops working, meaning that I can not zoom in/out using the trackpad. This lasts for 20-30 seconds, then it starts working again. When this happens, other trackpad functions (one-finger click, two-finger right-click) continue to work fine.

The problem occurs several times each day, and happens while using various Apple and non-Apple apps.

Any thoughts on how to problem-solve and resolve this issue? Thx.

Hello PommePourMoi,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you are having an issue with pinch to zoom gesture on the trackpad of your MacBook Pro. First, try running First Aid on your hard drive with the built in Disk Utility tool, as this can correct simple issues like you're experiencing.

Next, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log in to your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Cheers!
