Accidentally clicked 'Cancel' when they asked for my icloud password during the instalment. Subsequently i cannot install whatsapp on my macbook pro m1. It says "an error occurred while installing the selected updates". Have tried deleting and re downloading the software but it hasn't prompted me with the question again.

I have faced this issue too in the past where the password prompt doesn't appear but I cannot proceed with app installation as I need my password.
Try System Preferences > Apple ID > Overview > Sign Out. Then do a full restart of the computer. Sign back in when its restarted and see if that works.
