MacOS Music Equaliser not working correctly

I have just noticed that the music equaliser (macOS High Sierra) works fine with my non-apple airplay1 speaker, but if I switch to an apple HomePod mini (airplay 2), from the same music player, it has zero effect. Why is this? Surely the equaliser should perform consistently from the same source, regardless of the destination speaker type?

As a rule AirPlay 2 sends the digital data directly to the output device, and thus omits any EQ settings in iTunes/Music. If you connect using the AirPlay option in the Mac's volume control rather than one in iTunes/Music the speaker should get post-mix audio.
