Bookmarks and Favorites on Safari

I am having problems with understanding the change with favorites and bookmarks over the years. I have multiple devices and use Safari on most of them in very different ways. So, I would like to have a different "Favorites bar" on each. I found in MacOS Safari a setting to change what shows up in "Favorites" so I thought this would be my way there; however, it only changes the Favorites list in the "Start Page", not the "Favorites Bar". In addition, it doesn't change the title "Favorites" to the folder I selected to show up, so it still looks like that's my "Favorites" list - when actually it's a specific Bookmarks folder.

In the end, my question is how do I have a custom "Favorites Bar" on each device when every device is logged into my iCloud account and I don't want to lose the functionality of iCloud for all other purposes?

Thanks,

Michael

  1. Yes, I do have Safari bookmark syncing enabled.
  2. No, I don't have any Safari add-ons that deal with Favorite bar customization.

I want to make it clear also. I don't really care about bookmarks, although I think what is now the "Favorites Bar" was called the "Bookmarks Bar" before. I really don't care what it's called; what I would like is to have different Favorite bars on each device. It looks like this is no longer possible. You can customize what shows up on the "Favorites" section of the start page; you can create different bookmark lists (in folders) on the bookmark section of the sidebar; you can add and delete items from the "Favorites Bar", "Favorites" section of the "sidebar", and (as I mentioned above) you can customize what shows up in the "Favorites" section of the "Start Page". What, it seems, you cannot do is have a different "Favorites Bar" on each device if you have your iCloud account on each of those devices.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael Reiland,

We appreciate your time and thank you for partnering up with us. There is no current feature that supports what you are trying to do with your Favorites bar. Please keep in mind you may be able to find a Safari add on you can install to add similar functions without using iCloud, or use the Side Bar in Safari instead. You also can have different folders for each Mac and just expand that section for said Mac, ultimately we recommend leaving feedback on this matter. This is because your feedback is vital to Apple's goal of finding new ways to improve products and services: Product Feedback - Apple
