Running Logic Pro X Projects From External Hard Drive

What's up everyone,

For the last couple of months I've been getting consistent disk too slow or system overload messages.

After doing some research I found out it's better to save Logic projects to an external hard drive so I moved all my projects as well as all the other audio files that I had on my internal hard drive to an external one but now I'm wondering if it's ok to open the projects as well as work on them while there on the external hard drive or do I have to move them back to the internal drive to work on them?

I also noticed the increase in the messages as I created more projects. My storage went from about 200 gigs remaining to 137 gigs remaining, I kind of think that had something to do with it. After moving all the projects and audio on my internal hard drive I'm back up to 251 gigs remaining, it's pretty much just system stuff that's on there now.

Thanks,

iMac Late 2009 (21inch)

Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6

Logic Pro X 10.2.2

What's up everyone, thanks for the replies.

It's interesting how the responses I'm getting are so negative it's almost like having an older Mac is a sin.

You guys would probably be surprised to know that after running projects from the external hard drive Logic works as good as new. I don't get any messages and there's no glitches or anything it works like I've always known it to work. Once I realized it was working fine I started trying to catch up on work I was behind on because it was giving me problems but then I remembered JotaGi said to report my findings that's why it took me so long to update. So for anyone out there getting disk too busy or system overload messages consider giving this a try it worked for me.

And in case you guys are wondering why I'm using an older Mac it's simply because I have things connected in a way that I understand and it works for my circumstances.

Thanks again for the replies, I'm just glad it works now.

Hi, it's good that you backed up all your projects to external HD, because what might be happening is, your internal HD could be failing. Now, I might be wrong, of course, but judging by your iMac's respectable age, it's a not so distant possibility. The good news is, it should be relatively easy to replace the HD in your iMac. As for running projects from external HD, it shouldn't be an issue at all, except for the fact that Logic will impose some additional strain on that HDD.

Hey, thanks for replying.

If it was a matter of the HD failing, wouldn't there be problems all around? The only issue I'm having at all is the disk too slow or system overload message that I get in Logic, every other software or device I use works like usual.

There's lots of posts and videos on the internet of people with even the latest and most up to date products who still get those messages so I don't really think it's a matter of the HD failing unless that's exactly what those messages mean.

I'm going to try running a project and see how it goes.

Thanks again,
