Macbook Pro M1 16 inch popping audio

I have a random click - pop sound coming from the speakers randomly between 3 to 30 seconds apart. I have restarted, reset SMC, NVRAM, logged in as a new user, even a disk reset and fresh install. Nothing worked. It happens most frequently when I'm on Microsoft Teams conferences for work, Youtube, TV App, and Music. Killing coreaudiod works briefly before it goes back to the same thing. This is a brand new M1 Max 16" running latest Monterey (Same issue for any of the other versions either). Any suggestions?

Alright. I think that I've finally found at least one set of conditions that leads to this issue and a couple fixes (one that sucks and one that a lot sucks less). So I've been closely monitoring CPU / memory usage and the states of things when there are no pops and when the pops start showing up.

Essentially, what I'm seeing is that when there is memory pressure that goes into the "yellow" in your Activity Monitor, which for me happens during usage and pretty much only when memory usages hits the ~14GB of usage mark (on a 10-core, 16GB build). CPU usage doesn't seem to always have a direct impact, but I have seen that when I trigger something heavy on the CPU and stop it, that can trigger a pop sometimes (inconsistent). It seems like some CPU usage / swapping / etc. is at the least correlated with this issue. This tracks with what @virgil237 said above re: his memory usage being at 14GB.

Would love to hear if anyone using a larger build (32GB) or if you have a friend with one has the same issue when hitting the yellow, but not before. At least that would give us something material to run up the flagpole and get an Apple dev to look into. Also, considering whether to return this 16GB build and just go with an M1 max 64GB build and skirt the issue altogether as I'm guessing a fix won't be forthcoming very soon in any case.

The first fix, as you would imagine is...close things until you get under the 14GB mark and in the "green" and it seems that the issue is at least MUCH rarer, going from every minute or few to once in awhile. Not sure if this will be a software fix or a firmware fix. What is still interesting is how this still does not happen via Bluetooth at all. So, there's something there that further narrows down the possibilities for a sound system Apple dev out there. Core audio daemon routing specifically to the internal speakers?

That got me thinking about audio routing, so I went to get SoundFlower to play with some audio routing to see if I could route through SoundFlower and then to the Speakers with any improvements. SoundFlower not supported on M1 macs yet, which led me to the BlackHole 2ch audio router (existential.audio). So in the Midi Device setup you can add a Multi-Output device and make BlackHole 2ch the primary and set the speakers as the other device. Then set your main output device to the Multi-Output device. So far, popping is either gone or at least a lot rarer. Note that I'm still running heavily into the yellow in memory pressure with no popping. The one caveat is that you have to change volume in the Midi Setup due to the way the devices work...that may be easy to find a control for given all the good DAW software / routers out there. Seems like this should help a dev narrow things down even more. @Apple please look into this.

Hope this helps someone not go crazy. Let us all know your mileage with the proposed fixes and / or other solutions you find! I'll report back on whether this second fix seems to hold or not.

I have the same issue - periodic pops through speakers when playing videos or Zoom sessions - 16" M1 MacBook Pro with 16G

Please let me know if there are any solutions -i've restarted, reset SMC/NVRAM and tried several applications but the disturbing pops and crackles keep happening.

Checking here before I try Genius bar for in person assistance.

Thanks in advance for any solutions

This suddenly started happening on my 4-month old 16" MBP M1 16GB. No issue with memory pressure (green).

It began a few days ago when, as I opened the lid there was a random rattling sound not unlike some foreign matter getting into a fan might cause - but it came from the right speaker. At that point the right speaker went out completely for about a minute. When the right speaker came back on, everything seemed normal again. But then the clicking began.

Hi there, any further updates or resolutions? This is infuriating for a $2,900 computer. I have an appointment at the Genius Bar this week but I expect them to suggest a erase and reinstall which I have already done where the issue returned shortly there after. Hoping this is software, which based on the thread below sounds to be. Still no confirmation or resolution based on all I have tried and all I have researched. @Apple this is trash and unacceptable. MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) with M1 Pro

  • New user account -- issue persists
  • Reinstall OS -- issue persists
  • Boot from a known good OS (from external media) -- issue persists
  • Erase and clean install -- issue persists

I wish there were. As mentioned above, new laptop and same problem. I don't know how it's possible that this issue isn't affecting tons of users. I'm two for two on this laptop model, one space grey and one silver.

My guess is that we are stuck with expensive laptops with issues for awhile. If this thread is any indication, Apple doesn't seem very interested in chiming in.

I’m a pro audio music producer that works in the industry and I’m getting these periodical pops and hiccups through my high end audio interface. Very frustrating after dropping $3700 on a new laptop. I’m in a fix and don’t know what to do at this point. I wouldn’t be so frustrated if it were just doing it in Apple Music but it doesn’t matter what interface I’m using it does it. I can’t even listen to Apple Music without the pops. I’m so mad right now I could chunk this thing out the window.

I feel you. It's interesting that you are still getting this through another interface. This is mostly an internal speaker issue for me. I wish I had a solution for you other than returning it for an older model or waiting for Apple to care enough to fix the issue.

I'd return this Mac that I didn't want in the first place (unfortunately required for work I do), as Apple has largely stopped caring seriously about developers in recent years. Their hardware is impressive when it works, but their software has been lackluster for awhile and a complete cluster with this launch.

Also having this issue. Sporadic popping on a 14 inch MBP M1 Pro 16GB. Can go hours without anything then it happens repeatedly. Can be very annoying especially when on a video call. I expect it could be related to memory as it seems to happen when I'm seeing higher memory pressure and a restart usually helps.

Hopefully there's a real fix for this soon.

Yeah, pretty much any fix has just been temporary. Haven't had much chance to do more because Yahoo suddenly deleted my account so I wasn't able to check this discussion and spent the whole week scrambling to update emails to another email account. In the meanwhile, still getting the pops and crackles and it seems to be more frequent with the latest OS update.

I've had my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro for exactly a month and this issue just started yesterday. What the ****? Watching videos on Youtube and wondering if the host is knocking their microphone by mistake, only to realise its happening on any video, including ads. At which point I realised its the MacBook itself, not the content.

The cruel comedy is that the latest MacOS update fixed an issue I had with Safari randomly reloading the previous page...and literally days later I have this new, equally annoying problem.

PLEASE, Apple, give us stability!

I have the same issue too :-(

16inch MBP bought approx 3 months ago and I too get continuous crackles and pops. This happens when I play a radio station on My Tuner Radio, or if I'm listening to anything on Spotify. Strangely enough, I tested listening to music via YouTube and haven't heard a pop or crackle yet.

So annoying when you spend so much money on a piece of kit and you have these issues. I had a 15 inch MBP from mid 2014, and never had any such issues (that was a dream of a machine, apart from the noisy fans of course!)

I use my new MBP everyday for business and can't afford to be without it should I have to take it back to Apple for them to try and find out what's going on.

I have seen so many people complaining about this issue - surely Apple must be aware of this??? This should work without issue, we all shouldn't have to be doing internet searches for "try this fix, try that fix etc... I have tried them all and none have worked...so disappointing
