Safari not working since Feb. 16th update -had to change to Firefox

Ever since an overnight update - think this took place on or around 15th/16th Feburary - Safari won't work on my Mac (late 2013 model) - on macOS Catalina version 10.15.7.


The pages won't load or in some cases they try to but then freeze. I have to keep using the "Force Quit" option and have had to switch to another browser - Firefox - where I have no problems browisng the net.


The issue is I have all my regular websites and bookmarks set up on Safari so it is very inconvenient.


Is Apple aware of this problem? Can they release a patch to resolve ASAP?


Safari is - at the moment - working fine on my MacBook Air, iPhone and iPad. I am very reluctant to update any of them in case I have the same problem as I have with my iMac.

If this article doesn't help, you may have to contact Apple.

Make sure no proxies is selected.

System preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies

Click, “Free Download” button and then “Click to download” button,

open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar and select “Copy report”.

Click the “Page” button in the toolbar at the bottom of this page and paste it when you reply.

1. Quit Safari, launch Safari holding the Shift key down.

3. Clear History

Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

Please read the article before clearing history,

this is like a low level resetting of Safari without affecting passwords and bookmarks.

I tried the Safe Mode option - using the shift key on the restart process (I have an Intel processor) - and that didn't work either.


I didn't get any "Safe Boot" reference in the top right hand corner of the window as the guidance had indicated.


When I open Safari it won't load any pages. I continue to get the spinning rainbow wheel.


I can try raising this with Apple Support again but I think my best hope is a patch is released with the next update - hopefully soon.
