Continuity Camera - device time out error using MacBook Pro and iPhone 12

I'm attempting to use the continuity camera feature to use my iPhone 12 to scan a document that will be immediately stored in an appropriate app on my MacBook Pro (mid-2014 with Big Sur). I have reviewed the relevant Apple Support documents and I've verified that both devices are logged in to the same WiFi and both have BlueTooth turned and are connected to each other and are both logged in to the same Apple ID.

I'm able to use my MacBook to take a phone using my iPhone (Import from iPhone > Take Photo). However, when I use the Import from iPhone > Scan Documents, the iPhone immediately responds, opens the Photo app, takes the image, and then closes; but then MacOS gives an error message "Could not import from iPhone. Device was disconnected."

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
