Imported Photos into Apple Photos are Low Resolution and Uploading Very Slowly

Hello,

I have imported a load of photos from a Toshiba HDD and imported them into iCloud and Photos using my new MacBook Air. Some of the imported photos are when viewed in Apple Photos are of a very low resolution.

Photos seems to be stuck uploading the photos; it says it it is 2987 photos and hasn't changed much overnight from this, although the number of photos in Apple Photos has increased.

Can someone explain this and why it is taking so long to upload these photos into Apple Photos and/or iCloud.

I use Google Drive and One Drive and have never had this issues with these drives. Does iCloud and Photos carry out more work on the photos when importing them?

Thanks in advance

Rob

Hi

How did you import the photos? Drag drop works, but for more than a few it is better to use file>import.

Are you sure you don't have both full size images and thumbnails on the drive you have imported from. That would expaine why some are low resolution after import. Or are they all low resolution.

To check, search for the filename of a low resolution image, and find it on the HDD - what is the resolution there? (You can open with preview to check.

Regarding the speed of upload - this is normal. Upload to iCloud is just slow, and limited by apple servers, not your internet speed. It is normal for the status indicator to not update for long periods during this time also. For reference my 50GB 5000 item library took 48 hours. Leave your mac on, photos opened, connected to power and sleep disabled.

How big is your library?

Yes, it was a large dump of photos I imported. They have now eventually nearly all downloaded. Photos is now going through them looking for duplicates etc.. It’s taken over a day though, but your right, it seems the apple servers are just slow. I was panicked though as photos on my iPad Air will not sync with one of my MacBooks unless connected by a USB cable.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. :)
