generic EarPods way too quiet

Hi,

I am using a pair of basic generic EarPods and the volume is way too quiet. I've tried them on my iPhone 11, iPad and iMac and the same result. Even on my old iPhone 6. All are fully patched. I've done all the usual fixes suggested including messing with the music settings and accessibility. Also, the headphone safety settings. The problem is across all apps.

Just to test the EarPods I connected them to a Raspberry Pi 400 (latest Raspbian OS 64 bit). Running a Youtube clip the sound was plenty loud enough. In fact would have been uncomfortable in time. I haven't any android devices to test it with.

I do wear a hearing aid - but generally my hearing isn't that bad. I manage perfectly well with the sound levels from my Uproar over-the-ear bluetooth headphones. it's just the EarPods.

Any ideas?

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, your EarPods volume is quieter than expected.

It sounds like you've isolated the behavior. It's hard to say why this is happening. We'd try out steps in: If your headphones don't work with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you haven't yet, we'd try using another pair of wired headphones and test the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Should the issue persist with both headphones, then we'd say it's expected behavior. As the Raspberry Pi may have a different type of power or amp.

In case the issue doesn't persist with the other headphones, then we'd recommend replacing the EarPods.

Thanks. Yes I have tried those fixed. No luck. I haven’t tried a wired headphone on the iPhone 11, but on all devices with a proper audio port then I have and they are fine. Just as the uproar over ear headphone is and various Bluetooth speakers. The problem is just with the EarPods and only limited to apple products, not other makes.

I am guessing that apple implements some sort of “production” against over loud in ear headphones and got it wrong. Years ago I had a similar problem with an MP3 player. The fix was to change the localisation to another country. Suddenly the limit was removed and the sound fine.
