Why does the software not install and why can't I exit the install status box. The status bar appears with the usual blue dot but never advances.

When I try to install the so called required software to allow my phone to sync properly with my imac the status bar does nothing after I click INSTALL. I come back a half hour or several hours later and it is just as I left it. The phone seems to sync regardless
software is needed to connect to iPhone but when I select install it does nothing and I cannot get rid of the install status box
