About this Mac

I have an old (c. 2008) 27" desktop. I wiped it clean and was thinking about taking it in for recycle but when I booted it up, it's actually a fully functioning computer. I upgraded the operating system and it works pretty good. The problem is I can't get the "About this Mac" to display. When I select it, nothing happens. Do I have to have it logged into an Apple ID for this to work?
