Refurbished iPhone says the battery is not genuine
I just got a refurbished xs and there’s a message saying the battery is not genuine. Is this normal and fixable?

Depends on who did the refurbish.
If this phone was refurbished by Apple, they used original Apple parts.
if it was done by anyone else, they didn’t use Apple parts.
Who did you buy the phone from?
This means that the battery was replaced with a non-genuine Apple part. You should take the phone into an Apple-approved shop, or Apple store, and speak to them about a possible fix.
