How can you make a group and add contacts to a group on your phone - should be easily completed, but seems as though the only way to do so is by getting on my computer and going through iCloud? Isn't there another way?
The built in Contacts app is rather limited; you need a 3rd party app such as Groups to manipulate contacts between groups.

You need to create the group on iCloud on a computer.
Once that is done you can add a contact to the group on iPhone provided you have only that group selected. It will also be added to All iCloud group.
