Does iCloud Photos count against iCloud storage space?

My Photo library is about 30 GB. My families is about 280 GB.

We want to use iCloud Photos. I understand iCloud comes with 5 GB of free storage.

I have bought the 2TB iCloud+ storage plan and shared it with my family.

However...

Do I need to do this? Does Apple allow free unlimited iCloud Photos storage by default?

And if so how do I cancel iCloud+ but keep our photos in iCloud Photos?

In short, I recommend getting more storage for your photos.

Apple does not offer free photo storage in iCloud. Currently, I have the 2TB family plan for my family and between me and my family members, we store our photos and videos in the cloud and still have enough space for device backups and files.

If you wish to cancel iCloud +, see here: Downgrade or cancel your iCloud+ plan - Apple Support but just know that you will not be able to store your 30GB of photos in the 5GB free plan.

The storage for Shared albums is free and does not count against your free 5GB of Cloud storage. But the shared albums are having other limitations. The photos will be downsized to 2048 pixel at the longest edge, and you can have at most 200 albums with up to 5000 photos in each album. But it will suffice to show each other the best photos.
