Recovery Mode Crashing on an M1 MacBook Air, running Monterey

No longer a question - but maybe very important info for people:

We bought a brand new M1 MacBook Air this week (February, 2022.) I needed to install an extension and so I had to startup in Recovery Mode in order to enable kernel extensions via the Startup Security Utility.

But everytime I tried to do this, I would get the window with my harddrive icon and an Options icon, which I would click on and then click on Continue. It would then start Recovery Mode, but after 2 seconds it would crash and start up again like it normally does.

So I called Apple. The "Genius" said the machine was broken and I should get it repaired or return it.

So I started the return process (it was one day old!) and as part of that I had to log out of my iCloud account and remove this machine from my list of devices, which I did.

On a whim I decided to try starting up in Recovery Mode once more after doing this, and lo and behold, it worked.

Hopefully this will be useful information to someone out there since I could not find it and apparently Apple technicians don't know it either.

Good luck!

MacBook Air (2020 or later)
