Why Ringer indicator is red with a slash

My iPhone will not ring. When I try to turn up the ringer volume I see a red bell with a slash through it even though it also shows the volume going up or down depending on which button I press. I’m not in do not disturb mode and I have checked sounds and haptics. I can hear music so I know the speaker is good. and if I slide the ringer and alerts button I hear the phone ringer volume change, but it doesn’t ring when a call comes in.

Flip the Mute Switch, above the volume buttons, back to sound (toward the front of the phone). Sometimes that switch gets flipped to mute accidentally, such as taking the phone out of a case.
