I can't see the display on the external monitor with my macbook air

I am trying to connect my monitor (ViewSonic) to my new MacBook Air. I used to connect it to my old MacBook Air. I think I did the settings wrong so when I connect the monitor I can’t see anything on the Monitor screen. I don’t see the settings on the MacBook screen either when the monitor is connected. But I can’t change the settings when the monitor is not connected because it doesn't show up as an option. Is there a way to revert the monitor/display settings? Do I have to put the entire computer to factory settings (i hope not).

Before you begin

Make sure your Mac is running the latest version of macOS.

If your display is blank or not detected

Try these steps if you don't see an image on your display.

Check how many displays you can connect

To find out how many external displays your Mac supports, check its technical specifications page or use the Support tab in About This Mac:

Choose Apple menu  > About This Mac.
Click the Support tab, then click Specifications.
On the webpage that appears, the number of displays your Mac supports appears under Video Support or Graphics.

Check your cable or adapter

Disconnect the cable from your external display from your Mac, then reconnect it. If the cable from your external display doesn't connect to the ports on your Mac, you can use a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C adapter.
