Go to settings > general > keyboard > hardware keyboard and tap over at the right edge. Make sure that the layout you want (US for US English) is checked and NOT "automatic" or something else.
Also in settings > general > keyboard > keyboards make sure you have only the name of your own language and not extras for languages you do not type in.
