iPad Air 2020 scratches easily?

Greetings,

i bought my new Ipad Air 2020 on 17/2/2022 and got delivery/activated it on 22/2/2022.

Its now 2/3/2022 and my screen is full of small scratches, i cant believe my eyes. My iPad Air gen1 never had a single scratch after years of using. Same goes for all of my iphones that i use daily. As a matter of fact i stopped using screen protectors after iphone X and never looked back. So my big question is, does Apple stopped using quality glass on their iPad devices? Not sure if it supposed to be Gorilla glass or similar but it should have a protective layer on top, no?

And some clarification:

  • I have barely used it (tops 2 hours of usage from activation)
  • I dont wear jewellery/ring on my fingers
  • I havent used an Apple pencil
  • I havent used a screen protector (obviously!) nor a case
  • I dont own pets
  • I dont have kids
  • I dont play the guitar (short nails)
  • iPad hasnt left the house
  • iPad never been dropped
  • iPad has no scratches/marks or anything on its frame
  • iPad was used in a normal/usual way inside the house

If you ask me, this is not normal and thats why i created an Apple case

I would appreciate your valuable feedback on why this happened and what i should do in order to get this replaced. I know its tough due to the "cosmetic" nature of the problem, but as i said this is a brand new activated product that barely saw any real usage yet.

We are all other users here and, as such, cannot speculate as to why something might happen. We also do not know exactly what parts/mfr Apple uses - that would be proprietary information. Only Apple would know that. Something sharp must have come in contact with the screen.

Good luck!

Perhaps that you need to understand that there is a fine balancing act between scratch resistance - and drop survivability.

Glass optimised for scratch resistance is very brittle - and is likely to break if dropped, or subjected to impact. Glass that is formulated to offer good survivability characteristics are more prone to surface scratches.

Gorilla Glass is a trademark of Corning Glass. There are many types of glass that carry this trademark; of itself, the name does not infer specific resistance to surface scratches.

The environment contains dust - some of which is very hard and therefore highly abrasive. If an abrasive particle is dragged across a glass surface, damage to the surface will occur.

Use of a Screen Protector is a potentially contentious subject, but many users will use a good quality screen protector. The screen protector is a [relatively] cheap sacrificial layer - unlike the device screen which is the single most expensive component of your iPad. Contrary to popular myth, a good quality screen protector from a leading manufacturer (e.g., Zagg, Otterbox) will not negatively impact screen responsiveness or sensitivity.

Thank you for your helpful replies. My intention with this post is to see if other users experienced such behavior (ease of scratching). I know something I did created this damage, it just can’t get out of my head that my Air gen 1 had minimal to none scratches after 7 years+ of use. My guess, after reading your reply is that apple went for drop durability vs scratch resistance.

In addition to the screen cover glass, your iPad screen has a both a “hard coat” (offering a degree of scratch protection) and further sacrificial oleophobic coating that is intended to repel oils and dust. Neither of these can provide total protection.

It only takes one unnoticed abrasive grit particle to cause irreparable damage to the cover glass. While it is a matter of personal choice, if only to offer piece of mind, I always recommend use of a good quality tempered glass screen protector. Good examples are not cheap - but are significantly cheaper than a screen replacement.
