How to stop cursor from running off screen

the cursor runs off the screen (left or right but not up or down) and disappears. i have to swipe as far to bring it back (3 swipes left to right for example) as i swiped when it ran it off the screen (3 swipes right to left). i have looked throughout system preferences for a way to tell the cursor to stop at the screen edge, (or to reappear on the opposite side as though it had gone around the world instantly, as it were), as soon as it reaches the edge of the screen but find nothing. macbook pro 2020 M1 monterey 12.1. thank you for any help.
