Moving from a Fusion HDD to SDD.

I have tried to clone my Fusion HDD to a SDD but have not been successful. I have been using the Disk Utility to 1) initialize the SDD and 2) Restoring the entire computer by restoring the SDD with the computers "Macintosh HD.." I was able to get up the the cloned step/. However, I was unable to boot up the computer using the data on the SSD.

Can anyone tell me how to migrate my Fusion HDD to a SSD?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 12.2

Was the HDD part of a Fusion setup? You cannot clone either of the parts of a Fusion drive. The two are completely useless when separate and cannot be merged or data recovered from the individual parts (maybe data recover software).

If your Fusion Drive is intact, and you have Monterey or Big Sur installed on the drive, you cannot clone the startup volume easily. You may be able to do so with Carbon Copy Cloner or ASR in Disk Utility (Restore tab).

Install the OS on the SSD then Migrate your user data and apps from the Fusion drive.

You have to be booted into Recovery mode and use Disk Utility in Recovery Mode in order to make a bootable clone of your startup drive. DU can't clone your startup drive when you are booted into that same drive.

Alternatively, you might consider Carbon Copy Cloner, which can be used to make a bootable clone to another drive even when you are booted into the drive you want to clone.

See this guide from OWC for more information.

Th process of installing MacOS directly onto an external SSD and using Setup Assistance to migrate data is quite simple and straight forward. Why not do that and boot from the external drive? The external SSD was far faster than my wife's internal fusion drive.
