Keynote presenter problem

I just came from a meeting where I presented slides using Keynote. For the first time I tried using the Presenter options, set it up to show the active and next page. Looked useful. I also have many of the slides with "build ins" so they show paragraph or bullet as sequential items. The problem that I ran in to was that when I tried to play the slide show with recording, NONE of the sequential items of bullets would show. The slide would show the first paragraph but pressing the button, it would go to the next slide rather than show the next paragraph.

I hope this explanation makes sense. Puzzling to me but I could not record any of the presentaitons.
