Audio output stays in "headset" mode even after ending calls on MacOS

Hi -

My bluetooth headphone (AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro Max) will occasionally stay in "headset mode" after ending a call on my computer (mostly noticed when I have Zoom or Teams open). The solution I have found to fix it is to close the those calling applications to get it to switch out of "headset mode". Is there another way of checking which mode my bluetooth headphones are in?

Hey GoPokes23,

That's a great question! Depending on the type of app you use, the audio settings may vary.

We recommend that you test this out through FaceTime to further isolate the issue. If it only happens with third-party apps, the next best step would be to contact the app developer next: How to contact an app developer

If you can't find the contact information for the developer, search the internet.

Take care!

Hi GoPokes23,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It appears that you have some questions about using Bluetooth headphones with your Mac. When using Bluetooth, "The headset is automatically used as the sound input and output device for your computer." You can see how to check when it is in use using the article below.

Use a Bluetooth headset with your Mac

Take care.

Thanks for replying, GoPokes23, and that additional info, it really helps! Just to be sure, if you open the Music app and play a song after using Zoom or Teams, does the audio go through the AirPods? Also, if this is isolated to these 2 applications on your Mac, and not in an Apple application like FaceTime, you may have to contact their support for help with using Bluetooth headphones in their apps:

Contact a third-party vendor

The issue I've having isn't connecting to my bluetooth headset to my Mac, the issue is that my bluetooth headphones will stay in the "call mode" (I don't know what this is called, but when you're on a Zoom or Teams call, your headsets audio profile changes, its has a lot more treble and less bass to improve call audio I'm guessing) even after the call ends. The only way to switch it out of this mode is to close the call application I was in. Is there a way to toggle this setting without having to close the app or disconnect/reconnecting my bluetooth headphones?

Yes, the music app is usually already opened and when I end the call and go back to music, the audio does go through the AirPods, but the audio profile is still set for call. I haven't tested it with FaceTime because I don't use that on my MacBook Air. It seems like there should be a way to check the current audio profile for the sound on a headset, no?

Hey, I'm having this exact issue, so don't think you're alone in this one. Just posting here to hopefully get a bit more attention on this issue.

Sorry that the 'expects' have been useless in their replies too.

The most annoying thing is that this is a really easy fix on a PC (which I use for work), you literally can just select the stereo profile in the sound button on the menu bar. So strange that this isn't an option with Apple, they probably figure that they'll just 'magically' take care of it and it'll never be a problem, but the proof is in the pudding.
