Mail can’t open browser to complete authentication of google account

I have 4 google email accounts, a personal one and for 3 organizations. Have had for years and receive and send on each almost daily.

Two weeks ago, Mail stopped logging into one account. I got pop-up saying, “Enter password for the account “xxx. google requires completing authentication in your web browser.” And options are Cancel and Open Browser. When I click Open Browser, I get nothing but a spinning wheel. Have let it spin for 15 to 30 minutes. Never opens browser. Account never authenticated. Mail shows it as off-line and no messages come in or out on the account. See attachment.

The pop-up saying that “google requires completing authentication in your web browser” wasn’t usual. Before this would have every few weeks on one or all accounts. I’d click Open Browser, and immediately browser opened and autofill completed password. done. account back online. ok.

Now, everyday I must go to google and open the account that Mail can’t, using same browser (Safari) and same autofill password. And that is how I am forced to access this account that Mail can’t do.

You may temporarily need Firefox, instead of Safari, as your default browser, when you click that Open browser security challenge. That was the case when I encountered this Google email security dialog, and afterward, I revisited System Preferences > General and made Safari the default browser again.

Hello ArmandoWyo,

You can remove one of your Gmail accounts and then add it back to see if that helps. Here's how to do so on your Mac:

  1. In the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences, then click Accounts.
  2. Select an account, then click the Remove button.
  3. Note: If the account is used by other apps on your Mac, you’re asked to remove the account in Internet Accounts System Preferences. Click the button to open Internet Accounts, then deselect the Mail checkbox for the account. To stop using the account in all apps, make sure the account is selected, then click the Remove button.

Here are the steps to add the account back:

In Mail, choose Mail > Add Account, select an account type, then enter your account information. Make sure the Mail checkbox is selected for the account.

This should help isolate the issue. If this resolves the issue, you can repeat the process with the other affected accounts.

These articles can provide more information:

Important: If you’re unsure whether messages you want to keep are still on the mail server, move or copy them to a mailbox stored on your Mac (the mailbox appears in the On My Mac section in the Mail Sidebar) before you remove the account in Mail.

Best Regards.

Think I did it. didn't go as you expect and didn't work.

Removed ok, and just did Mail, cause account also used by Contact. clicked on minus tab at bottom of Preferences>Account. All in-box and sent on the account disappeared from Mail.

then did plus, and click on it as a google account. and for 5 minutes got the spinning wheel.

fortunately account still listed as "not enabled" in Preferences>Account. clicked on enable and all reappeared. clicked but still got spinning wheel to connect.

Hi ArmandoWyo,

Is the issue only occurring with one of your Gmail accounts, or all of them?

If it's only occurring with one of your Gmail accounts, was the one you recently removed/added the one that was having the issue?

Have you contacted Google about this? There may be a security feature you may need to enable/disable, or something along those lines, from their end of things.

Cheers!

Just account. others fine. And no changes in any account. As I said, initial popup that needed to enter password for an account to completing authentication in your web browser would happen in any of the accounts, usually all of them at once, every few weeks, but would take 1 click to open browser and autofill provided the password.

Till now I assume it was a small delay b/c logging in for 1st time of day.

no, haven't contacted google. i have found google impossible. And I'm out of US for 6 weeks and like everybody else (including Apple) only have 800 numbers.

Hello ArmandoWyo,

It's possible this issue is related to 2-step verification for your Google email account. Take a look at Google article: Turn on 2-Step Verification https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185839?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop and see if any of the suggestions there help with what you're experiencing. Otherwise, you may want to connect with Google Support for additional help.

Take care.

Thanks, Missy.

Good link and info. I am a rigor, constant 2FA-phobe. It’s based on parochial assumption that everyone is in USA, can ALWAYS receive a text, and if not, backup is ALWAYS an 800 number. I travel and work outside USA often; am right now. I get locked out of accounts all the time by 2FA. Todays its amazon. Has been Apple in past. I NEVER TURN ON 2FA.

I checked my google accounts, and I had done what I always do when possible: don’t provide phone number. So, at least not trying to send me a text.

Also on 2FA, typically works with a page in between saying that sending a text to a certain number. I don’t get that page. It’s only the spinning wheel when trying to connect to google.

Also, on my iPhone connects to all google Mail accounts with Mail/iOS and no problem. Same password. And I can go online to google and open the account. No 2FA prompts. Same computer and location.

It’s something in Mail app it seems to me.

Safari flunked the test. I switched default browser back to safari. All accounts said they were online. I was able to send from another account to the one Safari could connect to verify. but then to send from problem account, I got popup asking for its password. Copied in the identical pw I had just successfully entered in Chrome, and I got, “unable to verify account name or password.”

now to get mail on all accounts, I need to keep Chrome as default browser. To use it regularly to open internet sites-pages probably means moving my extensive bookmarks. But need to still keep in Safari. So adding to my continuing problem that 250 GB isn’t enough space. I already have all photos, music, audiobooks stored on external HD.

You’d think that with all the space macOS takes up, it could work better than this.
