Maps "My Guides" has stopped syncing between iPhone & MacBook

I have about a half dozen My Guides in Maps. I used to be able to add locations to the My Guides from my iPhone and it would update the My Guides on my MacBook. And vice-versa. But as of this week, that has stopped.

Now if I add to a My Guide on one device, it no longer updates the other device. I've created new My Guides on the iPhone and on the MacBook to test what would happen; the My Guides are not synced across devices. I've added to existing My Guides that *were* synced; they no longer sync.

Does anyone know what might be causing this to happen? Thanks!

Hello JingleBelly,

You can use iCloud to sync Map Data across devices. Here's how to enable iCloud on the iPhone:

  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > [your name].
  2. If you don’t see [your name], tap “Sign in to your [device],” then enter your Apple ID and password.
  3. Tap iCloud, then turn apps and features on or off.
  4. Make sure Maps is selected.

To set up iCloud on your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Apple ID, then click iCloud.
  2. If you don’t see Apple ID, click Sign In, enter your Apple ID and password, then click iCloud.
  3. Select or deselect each app or feature.

Doing this will enable the My Guides to sync between your devices.

Thank you for the update, JingleBelly.

With having completed the steps you have and verifying the settings, the next steps that are recommended would be to restart your devices and confirm you’re running the latest iOS and macOS. These steps can help with resolving the issue you’re facing. For reference, those steps are listed below along with the articles that outline those steps.

Restart your iPhone

How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, or 13
1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power off slider appears.

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.

How to restart your iPhone SE (2nd generation), 8, 7, or 6

1. Press and hold the side button until the power off slider appears.

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

How to restart your iPhone SE (1st generation), 5, or earlier

1. Press and hold the top button until the power off slider appears.

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the top button until you see the Apple logo.

Shut down or restart your Mac

On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Restart.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
1. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.

2. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.

3. If you see two software update options available, choose the one that you want to install.

4. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

You might see that your device is up to date and that there's an upgrade available. For example, even if your device is up to date with the latest version of iOS 14, there might be an option to upgrade to iOS 15. You might want to upgrade iOS when you pair an accessory with iPhone.

Update macOS on Mac

1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.
2. In the System Preferences window, click Software Update.

If your System Preferences doesn't include Software Update, learn how to upgrade to macOS Monterey or upgrade to an older macOS, and use the Updates tab of the App Store app to get app updates.

3. Click Update Now or Upgrade Now:

·       Update Now installs the latest updates for the currently installed version, such as an update from macOS Big Sur 11.5 to macOS Big Sur 11.6.

·       Upgrade Now installs a major new version with a new name, such as macOS Monterey. Software Update shows only upgrades that are compatible with your Mac.

If you continue to have issues after those steps, you’ll want to proceed with contacting Apple. Their contact details can be found via the Get Support website.

Take care!

Hello. Forgive me if I wasn't clear: Maps has already been toggled ON in iCloud on both devices — that's why My Guides have been properly updating for a year or so. Recently, that has stopped despite (1) being logged into iCloud on all my devices using the same AppleID, and (2) having Maps toggled to ON on iCloud in Settings.

It's a real puzzler!
