Rotate camera / display orientation for zoom call

On zoom video call, I need to set up my camera view to be in portrait mode (so 90 degrees rotation from the default view). The Apple support suggests to go to display settings and use rotate option. But on my MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015), Mac OS 12.2.1 (21D62), I dont see this option. How can I rotate the camera view? I use built-in 13 display & camera.

SonoRhythm,

This does not appear to be an option as a system-wide setting for the built-in camera via macOS.

That being said, it might be something you can control on an app to app basis. You mentioned the settings in the app you're currently using, Zoom, did not allow that.

What we can recommend is that you provide Apple feedback on managing this functionality via macOS and how you'd like to see it changed. Apple does have a website set up where they collect these types of suggestions. Here's a link Product Feedback - Apple.

Thank you.

Hi SonoRhythm,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

What you are describing sounds like it would be a setting within the Zoom app. Please see: Manually rotating video and specifically the section "How to rotate your camera before a meeting".

If that doesn't resolve the issue, please reach out to Zoom Support for further help with their app.

Have a fantastic day!

Hi MichaelB2019,

Thanks for a quick response and sorry for my delayed reply.

I had tried with zoom settings before posting my question (I should have clarified it upfront), but it doesn't solve my issue, as zoom app relies on the built in camera / display settings.

Let me put my problem in different way for better understanding.

Current default macbook air built in camera & display is in landscape mode, which is automatically used during zoom call.

I need it in portrait mode (for better coverage of self during for yoga sessions).

I thought rotating camera or display could also solve the problem hence I wrote so (which now I realise is incorrect expression).

I searched for inverting the aspect ratio (for example 9:16 instead of 16:9) but couldn't find.

Hope I have now explained it correctly and look forward for solution.

I don't think that what you are trying is achievable (short of rotating the mac itself).

It is not a "thing" to rotate just the camera or, to be more precise, you can't simply make the image taller instead of wider. That is just how the camera sensor is. You might be able to rotate the image in software, but that is a different thing. If I understand correctly, what you want is NOT to rotate the image, but rather to capture it with a different aspect ratio.

Do you have an iPhone? Or another camera?

That would be the easiest. You can put the iPhone in a vertical position and use the iPhone camera as the source video for Zoom. That would work nicely, and even give you extra flexibility, as you can place the iPhone in more than one location, use a tripod, etc.

Hi Luis Sequeira1,

Thanks for clarifying what is not achievable and alternate solution!

Yes, I have iphone (8 plus) and using it as camera for macbook would solve my issue, and give me flexibility to easily switch between portrait and landscape modes during zoom session, using tripod mount of my phone. (obvious question - why i am not using phone directly for zoom call? - cant see multiple view during zoom session, as clear as that on macbook)

I would try to find out how to connect iphone as a camera device to macbook.... if you already know it, would appreciate if you let me know here.

I can think of two ways to go about this:

1) Zoom lets you share the iPhone or iPad screen in a call. This can be done either with the cable or via Airplay. I often use this with my iPad, so I can write with Apple Pencil when teaching remotely. It works beautifully.

With the cable, it ensures the device is powered too. With Airplay it works much like, well, Airplay. This should show you just the video and not the interface elements of the iPhone.

One little caveat: in Monterey, in order to use an iPhone or iPad like this using Zoom’s Airplay server, you need to turn off the Airplay server built into macOS itself. Go to System Preferences-Sharing and uncheck “Airplay Receiver”.

2) There exists software that will let you use an iPhone or iPad camera as just another camera connected to your mac, but it is not free. I have not used it. Camo, Epoccam seem to do this.

In this case you would only need to select the camera from video popup menu in Zoom (next to the Dhow Video button), and you can easily alternate between the built-in camera and the iPhone one.
