Editing question involving frame-by-frame sound.

I'm using the latest iMovie version (10.3.1; if there's a later one please let me know). While locating "in" and "out points using the directional arrows, I've always been able to hear the audio track frame-by-frame. Suddenly I no longer hear it, which makes clean audio editing impossible.

Any suggestions? TIA.
