Desktop arrangement lost after waking from sleep

MacOS Monterey 12.2.1 / MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) / Apple M1 Pro

I have two additional monitors (BenQ PD2725U Displays) and the multiple display setup works fine.

On display #3 there are three "Desktops" each devoted to a different app.

After the system wakes from sleep, the Desktops from #3 all switch to display #2, and all the application windows on display #3 migrate to display #1.

It's disruptive and time-wasting to have to re-set my workflow configuration every time. I've resorted to disabling all the energy saving features. Can anyone recommend a fix?

Looks like I have a fix, after 1h call with support and some experimenting.

Step 1: create different local user and check if problem occurs again. For me, it didn't.

Option with new user is nor really good for me, as it means another onboarding process with my corporate, means new device ID, certificates, blahblah.

Step 2: shut down Mac, ten tap and hold power button for Startup options, choose options -> disk utility, and check Macintosh HD for errors -> "health check". For me, it didn't find anything.

Step 3: (being logged into your user) Finder -> Go-> Library -> LaunchAgents, delete everything inside, not the folder itself.

Step 4: go to Macintosh HD -> Library -> LaunchDaemons, delete everything inside, not the folder itself.

Restart Mac.

Now sleeping and waking, unplugging and plugging back - all app windows are back where I left off. Finally.

I’ve been following this thread intently as I have a new M1 MBP and I’m looking to buy a monitor. I had heard about this problem in the past but as Ive been working from an old iMac I hadn’t bothered looking into it until now. I’m surprised this was the last post, especially after you say you found a fix after your discussions with Apple. Interested to know if others have tried changing the user and if their issues were solved as well? This is indeed a very frustrating problem for many. One I do not want to experience once I purchase a monitor.

I have three external 4k HP monitors attached to a Mac Studio, after upgrading to Ventura the display order is still randomised almost every time I reboot.

I've tried SwitchResX and that doesn't work on my set-up either.

I've tried deactivating Mission Control and no joy there.

There are no deamons in my library prefs as it's a new computer and OS.

I've run out of options...

This is a terrible bug - we can't use Mac Studios for daily work, let alone exhibition installs, unless this changes as we can't have them auto-configure correctly if there's a power outage. @apple needs to address this ASAP.

I'm glad that Ventura has resolved your problems.

Unfortunately, Ventura only made things worse for my new Studio Ultra and 2 Studio Displays. My only work-around remains the same as I have been using for the last few years with an IMac Pro and external LG 5K display: disabling going to sleep. But when restarting sometimes the windows stay put but mostly they don't.

If Ventura actually did make some change that you noticed, then I would be concerned that the Apple teams now believe that they have actually fixed the problem and won't work on it again. Sigh.

@Steve Mills Agreeed! I opened one a few weeks ago. No follow up as of yet. I recently updated the ticket with a link to this thread.

None of the suggested changes in this thread worked for me either. Randomly everything resets to zero, after I spend 10 minutes getting everything really cozy.

Hope it's high on their bug fix list, lots of digital creatives have more than one monitor, I only have 1 and it takes a minute.... imagine if you bill at 300 an hour and you spend 30 minutes reseting your work spaces RANDOMLY during your work day.

This is a HORRIBLE solution: preventing displays from sleeping causes them to degrade. There is a good reason to let displays sleep!!!!

We have a problem, Apple, and it just can't be that hard to fix! I have never seen this problem before, and I have been using multiple monitors on my Macs and MacBooks for decades.

This problem is NEW with my new MacBook Pro 14-inch 2021 M1 Max. Upgrading to Ventura 13.0.1 has not fixed this very annoying bug.

I bought a MacStudio Max last week. I use 5 screens all windows expanded to full screen. One of the screens has 7 windows. Reducing all the scrambled windows to the desktop and moving them to the correct screen is wildly time consuming and insane. They shipped the machine with Monterey. I'm hearing Ventura is worse. In any case if they've fixed it I can't find it. If they haven't they need to.

And before anyone suggests it, I shall graciously decline either (a) creating a new user, (b) reinstalling MacOS, or (c) trying safe mode, since these are time-wasting exercises that detract from the underlying issue of a bug existing in MacOS.

Right?

I kinda get why this is insisted upon to a) eliminate variables, and b) for more beginner users... but it's annoying too.

As someone who considers myself a more "advanced" user, I've never had to contact Apple Support for anything other than things which I consider fundamental bugs/quirks/mistakes in the OS or default apps. And, they always have turned out to be exactly that: I don't think I've ever had an issue of this nature that has been fixed by any of those three "solutions", and many issues I've had (like this one) have lingered across major OS updates, and even occurred on brand new machines.

One issue, which is still ongoing, but I have pretty much given up on, has been ongoing for over two years... I reached the highest level I could with Apple Support, and still it's ongoing with a brand new computer with a fresh OS install.
