Disk space almost full

I have a 2015 MacBook Air. I would like to factory restore it so I can give it to a friend. However, I did this and it now says there’s even less space. Is it just too old? Why won’t the disk space clear if there’s nothing on the computer?

As long as you follow the instructions in What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support, don't worry about how much space remains. There will be just as much space left as when it was new.

Be sure to follow all those instructions. For example, both Steps 7 and 8 say to "press Command-Q to shut down instead of continuing setup." Let your friend set up the Mac.
