ASCII codes for MACs

To make this a question I'll ask "Why must threads be closed--doesn't this cause more pain than joy?". For example, it made me do this in order to do this:

Actually I only wanted to comment, upvote, and thank Tom G for the more direct answer to question 3370194 on how to enter character by code. I had the same question because of a malfunctioning physical key, and needed to keep working pending repair. The unicode hex keyboard works great. For convenience I also checked "Show input menu in menu bar" so I can switch the option key back and forth between its MACish modifier role and hex entry. Finally, if you need hex entry during login as I did, set the login window to allow input selection.  BTW testing with Lock Screen did not expose the problem enough, had to actually log out--but don't do that until you're sure you have a way back in!

Fortunately no hex code of a letter contains that letter. I'd have been in real trouble had the sick key been a digit.

is a great guide to ASCII codes on the Mac.

Not really. The decimal and hex codes show there are for the legacy MacRoman charset, which is obsolete, having been replaced long ago by Unicode Latin Extended A, show below. The column on option key strokes, however, may still be good for Apple's US keyboard layout I think.

Startly QuicKeys has been the great macro tool for Macs. Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts also allows you to create shortcuts with unused keys.

Macs will take almost any USB keyboard, without drivers Only special keys may function differently. The physical layout of

Option = Alt key

Command = Windows key

is opposite on Macs. Microsoft does make drivers for their own keyboards to switch that layout for people who are accustomed to the Mac configuration.
