iCloud storage full when devices are less than half full

I’m having a problem with iCloud storage. It keep getting notifications that my storage is full, however when I compare this to my devices, I can see the following:

iPhone storage is 87g/256g full. About 5th of the used storage is photos

iPad storage is 83g/256g full. About a 5th of the used storage is photos

iCloud storage is nearly full (200g). About 75% of the total storage is photos

Additionally when I delete photos from the iCloud website, it deletes them from devices too

Can anyone tell me what’s going on and how to fix it please?

Hi DustBucket86,

iCloud storage and device storage is separate, so it's not uncommon to see device storage not reflecting the same as iCloud storage. You can read more about iCloud storage here: What's the difference between device storage and iCloud storage? - Apple Support

One thing that could be causing your iCloud to be more full can possibly be iCloud backups, if applicable. You can see how much storage space backups are using in iCloud by following the steps below.

  1. Open Settings on either your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name near the top of the screen
  3. Tap iCloud, then tap Manage Storage
  4. Once that screen shows, you can tap Backups for more information.

Another step you can take directly for photos is to optimize storage. The information below shows how you can do that. Since you already have iCloud Photos enabled, you won't need to follow step two, the real important step there is number three.

"Store your photos and videos in iCloud

Your photos and videos are stored on your device in their original, high-resolution version. This means that they use a lot of space on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. With iCloud Photos, you can make more space available on your device and have your entire collection, everywhere you go.

Get started with iCloud Photos:

  1. Tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
  2. Turn on iCloud Photos.
  3. Select Optimize iPhone Storage to save space on your device."

We hope that information helps.

Take care.

Hi DustBucket86,

Did you verify if you have the Optimize iPhone Storage feature enabled on your devices? If you do, that would explain why the storage is being used in iCloud but not on your devices. This means smaller, space-saving photos and videos are kept on your device while all of your original, full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud.
